Why does Arizona flood with minimal rainfall? Should you get flood insurance?
Arizona averages between ten and twenty inches of rain a year. That number compared to other states who have a lot more and little flooding almost seems laughable. So why do we flood? Arizona has a lot harder ground than that of say Louisiana, New York, Chicago, etc. Living and traveling in Arizona you see how dry riverbeds and run offs are. Since they are so dry when it rains the water does not get absorbed in the ground as quickly as it needs to. This causes the water to keep flowing (downhill) until it eventually has somewhere to go... usually the most inconvenient of places!
Now should you get flood insurance. Ultimately that is up to the homeowner but if you are in a flood zone I would say definitely! If you would like to know if you are in a flood zone you can visit: https://www.fema.gov/states/arizona
